48km from Tunku Abdul Rahman Park, Pulau Tiga was gazetted as a national park in 1978. Covering an area of 15,864 hectares, the national park consists of 3 beautiful islands – Pulau Kalampunian Besar, Pulau Kalampunian Damit (better known as Snake Island) and Pulau Tiga. Within the park are numerous plant species as well as brightly coloured corals.
Pulau Tiga is believed to have been formed by the eruption of several mud valcanoes, which with the combination of subterranean gas pressure and expelled muddy sediment could have built up the island to its present height of approximately 100m above sea level.
Pulau Tiga made it fame being chosen as the location for the first US CBS TV series ‘Survivor’.
Best time to visit Pulau Tiga
The best time to visit these islands is between February and April each year when the weather is drier and the sea is calmer. Only limited chalets are available. For camping, remember to bring along your own food and equipment, and to obtain the permission from the Park Ranger before doing so.
Going to Pulau Tiga Park
Drive 140km southwards from Kota Kinabalu to Kuala Penyu, and take a 45-minute boat journey from there to these exotic islands.
Where to stay in Pulau Tiga
With only one resort on Pulau Tiga, you can guarantee a relaxed and tranquil dive holiday. Pulau Tiga Resort offers PADI dive courses and many dive sites for the novice and experienced divers including some unexplored dive locations.
My girlfriend and I are going to Sabah march 2010 and would like to do a couple of days just relaxing on a unspolit beach, with the possability of a bit of a trek to waterfalls. Accommodation can be basic that is not a problem, would you recomend Tiga Island for this? if so can you tell me name of accommodation.
Thanks
Cheryl
Hello,
Just one simple question. Does Pulau Tiga offers PADI dive course? If yes how long does it takes and how much. Is it possible to take an intensive classes during the weekends?
